Reinstate Sanaz Raji

Protesting outside ICS at Leeds University

Protesting outside ICS at Leeds University

Around a dozen students protested outside a conference being held by the Institute for Communications Studies (ICS) at Leeds University on Monday 10th June. The protest demanded the reinstatement of Sanaz Raji, a PhD candidate who had her scholarship with the department revoked almost two years ago. Since then she has been campaigning to be reinstated.

Placards explained why the protest was taking place, whilst those going into or passing the building were leafletted with the details of Sanaz’s case. Our protest clearly got noticed as someone from the department came out to offer to talk to Sanaz inside if she stopped protesting. However, matters have escalated way beyond this with the university having gone through its proceedures and at numerous levels have refused to meet with Sanaz, including the Vice-Chancellor. Whilst Sanaz is appealing the decision to the Office of External Adjudicators, we made it clear that these protests will continue until Sanaz is reinstated.
